We have all
been accused of staying within our comfort zones at sometime and so
it is with manufacturers, some like Daewoo make everything from cars
to ships while others like Belkin are known for their networking
products and more recently some storage products. But a major
shift can signal a change in fortunes so companies are very cautious
about new product areas, Belkin are testing the water in the mobile
electronics market with the Belkin Bluetooth Headset, a market
normally reserved for the powerhouses that are Nokia and Sony
Ericsson.
It certainly looks the part its boom free design is popular in
the mobile market and with a 5 hour talk time and 120 hour standby
on paper its up with the class leaders in Bluetooth technology.
Supporting the 1.1 headset profile the Belkin Bluetooth Headset can
support a distance from the mobile phone of up to 10 meters and can
be paired with up to 8 different mobiles, the headset is based
around a flash memory based Bluetooth stack and Belkin voice codec.
Battery charging dispense with those fiddly connectors used by
both Nokia and Sony Ericsson, the Belkin has a docking station in
which the headset will charge to capacity quickly and without fuss,
this is a nice touch. Audio quality is acceptable if not perhaps a
bit quiet even at its highest setting, in car use can be a struggle
in a noisy vehicle as there seems to be little or no noise
suppression, this gets worse the closer to the 10 meter limit you
get.
Comfort is good with an over ear design making prolonged use
manageable and the answering button gives a an easy and
positive way to answer and end calls, 2 other switches provides the
ability to adjust volume , pair and power the unit.
Overall this is a competent headset but not the best available
which is a shame as Belkin show promise in using their clear
electronics know how and mass market pricing but needed to make this
headset a market leader to announce their attentions. Why would you
buy this? well probably to get a well priced headset that is
different from the guy next to you but we can't pretend its the
latest or best technology available.
