Belkin Tunecast

Belkin TunecastSo you've got a nice new MP3 player and can cart round enough MP3's to play back to back for 7 days, but you can hardly wear your headphones while in the car, it'd be uncomfortable not to mention dangerous and possibly illegal, but what are the alternatives?

Sure you could get a professionally installed kit, they are available, but they cost plenty and involve some MDS (major dash surgery) perhaps Belkin have the answer with the Belkin Tunecast, a simple device that can take the output from an Ipod (or any devices with a 2.5mm jack) and broadcast it on FM to your stereo.

The simple lozenge shaped device is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and can run on 2 x AAA batteries or can power itself from DC if you buy the add ional power cord, the face has a display for the FM frequency that its set to transmit on, the range can be tuned from 88.1MHz-107.9MHz and it can memorise 4 favourites.

Having set a frequency you just tune your car stereo to the same station and you should hear the output of your MP3 player in FM stereo as if it was a radio station, the range is severely limited so don't think you are going to set up a pirate radio station with it as you might only make it as far as your kitchen. But in the confines of a car it puts out enough strength so that it swamps and actual FM stations, we tried by tuning it over radio 1 (which is the strongest signal we found) and found that there was some breakthrough, so we tried finding a quieter bit of frequency and bingo it all worked nicely.

To be fair we'd advise tuning to an unused frequency for guaranteed listening without any interference but for just £40 this is a wonder of a gadget, while we tested with LP's Ipod 3G the Belkin Tunecast can plug to any 2.5mm jack enabled device even LP's Ipaq PDA!

Any criticisms? well its a bit of a sod to fit anywhere its nice style shape is impractical for trying to sit it on top of the MP3 player so it ends up laying lose unlike the iTrip which when paired with an Ipod sits together snugly, but then an iTrip only works with Ipods. Also you must be aware that finding a blank bit of frequency in an urban environment such as London is not easy and failure to do this means breakthrough becomes a problem.

Overall a great gadget and for those wanting their MP3 collections in car we say get yourself a Belkin Tunecast ASAP.
