BenQ Joybee 120

BenQ Joybee 120We pay a lot for style and for a brand in the world of gadgets, it's no good just having an MP3 player it has to be an Ipod, but we beg to differ for real value you have to look beyond the badge and at the feature to price ratio. This weekend we've had the BenQ Joybee for company, BenQ is not the most stylish of brands but a well known one none the less and one that has a good reputation in electronics.

The BenQ Joybee 120 is very much an entry level MP3 player and answers a niche that we often get emailed about, "what can I get to hold a few albums and would be good for the gym?". The flash memory Joybee 120 holds 128mb of MP3 files which should be good for 2 album's and with 16 hours replay time from the Lithium Ion battery its good for a few workouts.

Getting MP3 of WMA files onto the Joybee is achieved via USB 1.1 connectivity with a host PC with a write speed of 650kbits, although the low price doesn't allow for any software beyond the driver so loading is a manual drag and drop affair using windows.

MP3's can be replayed at bit rates between 32 and 256kbps and the Joybee can also record at very low mono rates to store up to 500 minutes of voice recordings allowing it to double up as a Dictaphone, of course being USB flash memory means the this BenQ can also offer standard USB memory storage.

Audio quality with a good set of headphones is acceptable with minimal noise and a balanced audio range reproduction, the supplied headphones however do not do the Joybee 120 any favours they are clearly a cheap offering and do detract from the overall sound of the unit.

BenQ Joybee 120In terms of style despite the American BenQ not being in the top tier of brands the unit looks like a mini walkman and measuring just 57 x 38 x 11.5mm its easily slipped into a pocket or the strap can be used to secure it to your person and at just 24 grams its very light. Available in a range of metallic colours and with a backlit blue LCD screen anyone who isn't a gadget snob will struggle to know what a great deal you got compared to their Ipod Mini.

At £85 the BenQ Joybee 120 represents excellent value for money as an entry level MP3 player there are versions with larger drives but for our cash this is the pick of the range with affordable well built and lets be honest quite stylish technology.
