There's
a bandwagon in town and the Tech boys are just waiting to jump on as
it rumbles on through, yes another company has unveiled its PMP or
portable media player ambitions and this time it's Korean outfit
Cowon. The Cowon A2 PMP is due for release in the first quarter of
2005 and forms part of a bigger international push by Cowon. The A2
was on show at CES and attracted a lot of interest with it's 4" TFT
LCD screen which looks the part being wide screen ready for playing
all those ripped and downloaded movies, alongside what looks to be
promising display qualities the A2 PMP has stereo inbuilt speakers
which may even sound ok unlike some of the devices we've tested so
far.
As an all round multimedia device the Cowon A2 PMP will support
Windows media, Divx3.11/4/5 and XviD at variable bit rates, the
device can also encode on the fly though an AV in connection
although it is not expected to have any kind of EPG system or tie
in, it will also be possible to hook up to a large screen through an
AV output.
Audio
is also well catered for with support of MP3, WMA and the
increasingly popular Ogg Vorbis format, the device can also display
JPEG and BMP images stored on its disks as a slideshow.
The PMP is expected to be available in 20 gig and 30 gig
versions, there were rumours that the A2 would only have USB 1.1
connectivity but Cowon are expected to deliver the faster 2.0
interface for connecting to a host PC.
