Dualit
are famous for making kitchen electrical products, their toasters
have become iconic statements and now they have released a rather
simple thinking espresso machine. But that is the ethos of Dualit,
create something simple but ensure it’s built and works to the
highest standard. As far as coffee machines go the Dualit 84009
looks very different, its completely clad in chrome making it a
chunky and bold statement, there are no signs of the plastic look or
feel of other espresso makers available. This is definitely one for
the boys that reeks of quality and that you would expect to be far
more expensive than it is.The Dualit 84009
has definitely a retro feel about it, three large twist dials and
several click-clunk buttons. It’s easy to navigate through the
different settings far more so than other basic espresso makers, and
also as most of the functions are controlled by the twist dials you
can see easily what you have selected.
The main features on this machine include:
2ltr water tank (making about fifteen cups,) fifteen bar pump
pressure, coffee filter for one or two cups, water and steam frother
and removable metal drip tray. At around the £245 mark as previously
mentioned this is far less expensive that you would guess. Your
getting more features for your money than any other basic espresso
maker we have come across to date, (please bear in mind that you
will need to purchase a good quality coffee grinder if you intend to
use fresh beans, in fact there is one in the range to match at £55,
the Dualit 75002 Coffee Grinder.)
The milk frother on this machine is possibly
the easiest function of all; by simply twisting one of the dials you
can control the steam exactly to your requirements without the fear
that it will suddenly increase all by itself. It has a standard
frothing attachment to it that enables you to create a good thick
froth as well as perfectly warm milk. There is an art to it but you
will eventually master it, practice makes perfect.
As with all basic machines the Dualit 84009 is slower to use than
the digital machines that we have reviewed, but having said that for
that ultimate Italian coffee that brings back distant memories of
spring days spent strolling through the street cafes of Rome (even
if you have never been,) you cant go wrong with this machine. And
once you have eventually gone through the process of creating your
selected coffee you can sit back and enjoy a cup of something that
you have produced by yourself from scratch.
