So
you have your Ipod Mini at last, you waited a long while to get it
and now you fancy showing it off a little, but like any MP3 player
the thought of letting someone else use your headphones doesn't seem
to so appetising, well Altec Lansing have come to the rescue once
more with the inMotion iMmini for Ipod Mini.Like its bigger
brother the inMotion iMmini is perfectly styled to compliment the design
masterpiece that is the Ipod Mini, but this version is obviously
smaller than the Inmotion for Ipod version we tested a few months
back, it folds down to about the size of a hardback book when not in
use and weighs just 425 grams which isn't bad when you discover that
the inMotion iMmini is a 4 Watt class D amplifier.
But while the
iMmini is smaller it's sound has not been scaled down,
we were shocked by the quality of sound from the bigger version and
the smaller iMmini still posses that warm rich quality of sound even
without use of a subwoofer. This is due to the Altec Lansing
neodymium 2 x 25mm and 2 x 18mm drivers which manage to produce a clear and well
weighted sound without adding substantial weight an bulk to the
package, these new drivers also contribute to the excellent battery
life of 24 hours on a single set of four AA batteries.
The built in docking station is a pleasure to slip the Ipod Mini
into, of course you'd expect it to be a nice fit but this feels as
if Apple had made it themselves, the iMmini is the perfect home for
your Ipod Mini and just by using your charging cable you can hook up
the Mini to the mains to keep it fully charged while in the inMotion
iM3. Of course you can plug the lead directly into a Firewire
enabled PC or Mac and get both charging and synchronisation while in
the dock, so this may prove a better buy than purchasing your own
Ipod Mini dock separately!
There are a few nice extras like an Auto shutdown feature in case
you leave the amplifier powered on and eating your batteries, there
is also a line in facility to attach other audio devices, plus a
stylish carry case. Downsides a few and far between, but the audio
level is lower than the bigger Ipod model and of course that is to
be expected but it would have been nice to squeeze a little more out
of the iMmini, also we would have liked to see an FM radio included
which could have added this feature to your Ipod Mini when ever in
the dock.
So another stylish accessory for the Ipod range from Altec
Lansing and this inMotion iMmini unit is styled very squarely at owners
of the most popular silver Ipod mini but we're sure that a quality
gadget like this will overcome the colour device and be fitted to
all shades of Ipod Mini when it arrives in the UK at the end of the
summer, pricing is expected to be around the £90 mark meaning its
over half the price of the Ipod Mini itself but when you subtract the
cost of an Ipod Mini dock @ £30 they start to look like good value.
