Finally
we get our paws on an Intempo PG01 or "Peggy" DAB radio as it has
become known for review, after many mornings driving to work
listening to Pete and Geoff on Virgin Radio and them giving peggies
away we can now tell you what one is like. The Intempo PG01 is
another retro style DAB unit, there is something inherently strange
about taking a new technology and wrapping it in the case from a
bygone era, its a bit like taking the latest digital HiFi and adding
a sound trumpet. Styling aside the PG01 has 2 integrated 5 watt
speakers that produce what we would describe as an adequate sound,
there is a smattering of bass but the unit is not loud enough for a
large room and is much more likely to be found in a study, kitchen
or even a shed.
The Peggy benefits from all the standard DAB features like an
excellent fade free sound and being able to search for station by
name, the later is a useful feature as there are only 4 DAB presets
on the unit, which is a bit stingy. There are also 4 FM presets as
the Intempo PG01 has an FM tuner for those areas of the country
where DAB doesn't reach, this is a neat idea for those who may
travel with their radio perhaps groups like fairground owners and
caravaners, for the rest of us its either nice to think we could
listen to FM or annoying that we bought a DAB radio and have to use
FM!
The 2 line 16 character LCD screen glows you guess it Blue! and
Intempo make a feature of the "telescoping aerial" we think at this
stage the marketing department were struggling to see why their own
product would stand out against the likes of the
Pure Bug or
Sony XDR S1.
Its mains powered with no battery option which is a shame as the
Lordpercy.com shed has no mains power just yet, the sleep timer
works well and the Peggy could easily become your bedside alarm
clock. Overall its not a bad unit, its better for speech rather than
music due to its lack of power and bass at £79 its good value and
maybe that's its saving grace, if it were our cash then we'd have a
Bug or the Sony, or possibly the
Sharp Portable.
