It's
been a while in coming and perhaps its a sign that Apples iPod is no
longer the dominant MP3 player, but at last they have caved in and
given the world an FM radio. For years company's like
Griffin and Belkin have made after market bolt on FM tuners for the
iPod but now Apples own iPod Radio Remote is due to hit the stores
priced at £35.
The iPod Radio remote will work with all fifth generation iPod's
(including the Nano) and also offers a remote capable of driving
your iPod while it remains out of sight in a pocket, you get full
tack control and volume adjustment. Of course the real extra is the
FM Tuner which uses the earbud cables as an antenna and at last
gives the iPod a radio, one feature almost all its competitors had
already added. The 15.7 gram FM tuner makes use of the RDS (Radio
Data System) to display station name and even some limited
information sent by a few radio stations which are displayed on the
iPod's screen. The iPod radio can receive stations between 87.5 to
107.9MHz on the FM band.
So not all perfect as we'd have preferred to have seen an LCD
display on the remote itself which could have then doubled as a
second display of the MP3 playback data as Sony and others have
included within their players. Also UK readers may have wished for a
DAB decoder rather than the old hiss and fade of FM, but we
shouldn't knit pick too much, we'll just say thank you Mr Jobbs for
adding this small extra to the uber sexy iPod Nano and full size
iPod range.
Available immediately and selling for £35 its sure to be in
demand.
