The
Magimix M200 is a completely different kettle of fish compared to
other machines. It works on a different process of the Nespresso Pod
System. Because it is so different looking we expected it to be more
complicated than other machines in fact the Magimix M200 is one of
the simplest coffee machines we have used. Firstly there is no way
around talking about its looks, the manufactures lovingly call this
the pelican although here in the LP.com office we think its more penguin
like, (its also available in the sunburnt penguin look… Red &
Black.) It is obviously quite a design statement that will fill
hours of dinner conversation but when it comes to the after dinner
coffee will it perform?
We found making a great espresso, cappuccino or café latte couldn’t
be easier with this coffee machine, but this isn’t down to the
machine but more to the pod system. With the Nespresso pod’s you
can’t go wrong by putting in too much coffee or whether to use beans
or pre-ground. The Magimix M200 comes with 40 pods / capsules of
various different strengths and tastes. Simply place your selected
pod in the top of the machine pull the lever forward to start. Once
the coffee is poured return the lever to its starting point and the
old capsule is disposed of in a nifty bin at the back. An electronic
warning system will sound when the bin needs emptying; we found this
to be after about fifteen pods.
The water tank
(1.2ltr) also at the back of this machine is easily removed and
re-filled allowing you to make around 8 cups before having to
refill. The warm up time is about 10min, which isn’t bad considering
it’s not a large machine.
The main key
features on this machine that make it a bit different are; nineteen
bar pump pressure which is ridiculously high, a specially designed
venturi cappuccino spout (four holes) for even creamer toppings and
the bonus of two cups and saucers free of charge. At around £299 the
Magimix M200 (Silver & Black) is definitely good value for money but
how soon will the highly stylised design go out of fashion and start
to look dated?
Every attention has
been paid to the detail; the controls feel solid and glide through
the movements. The switches have a very convincing click to them and
when removing or putting parts back everything seems to fit with
ease. Also a 2 year gold service warranty with the option to extend
it is a great bonus. There are other brands that carry versions of
this machine curtsey of Nespresso but through our research the extra
features are generally geared towards use rather than for gimmick
value on the Magimix M200.
Obviously with any new purchase we found this great fun quite
simply for ‘new toy’ value but in the real world of every day life
this is a winner, quite simply because it is so simple / hassle free
and fast to use. The only down point is as great as the pod’s are,
you cant buy them from your local store, only via the internet.
