You
may be familiar with the small Morpheous geodesy unit that has been
available in the UK for a few years in fact LP road tested it over 2
years ago while writing for another site, the latest addition to the
Geodesy range is the Road Pilot a fully featured speed trap locator.
Based upon the Morpheous database which is now once of the most
comprehensive available the road pilot takes the ability of its
smaller cousin much further with the addition of an LCD screen it
isn't colour which is a shame but the grey scale gives clear concise
instructions even in direct sunlight which is essential for a device
of this kind.
Installation is nice and simple, a good tip is to hook up the
road pilot via its USB lead to your PC for a quick update to the
very latest may and possibly a firmware update before you set
about getting the road pilots screen in the best position in car.
The mounting system is good with a very stronger sucker which can
clamp onto the windscreen or dash and there are relatively few
cables with just a power cord and a flying lead to the GPS receiver.
Once firmly attached to your dash its on with the GPS system
which took about 3 minutes to get its first fix (this later improved
to about 1 minute 30 seconds from cold) the screen can display a
plethora of information but at start-up it shows the current speed
(most likely zero) a compass and your exact location in latitude and
longitude.
Once
on the move the display can be changed to show all manner of
readouts, a mimic of a speedometer and then when you are in range of
a speed trap all hell breaks loose the audible warning kicks in
accompanied by on screen indications of distance to and direction of
the trap as well as the type of trap. A really cool feature is the
warning is more vigorous if you are exceeding the speed limit that
the camera is enforcing, this means if you are under 30mph you get a
minor warning but lets say you are doing 40 approaching a 30 then
you get the full on alert.
In our usual Gatso alley the Morpheous Road Pilot scored a
perfect 100% on fixed Gatso's and it also knew about the Specs
system in the Lime house tunnel plus a Truvelo head on camera, this
is an impressive bit of kit, plus it also reminds us of a handheld
GPS system as many of the basic mapping features, distance covered,
average speed are available on the Road Pilots screen.
The
database used to located the speed cameras also contains a secondary
list of accident black spots which of course according to UK
government policy must be identical to the camera locations, we can
assure you they are quite different and the "collision black spots"
warning when activated highlighted a few local areas that have
witnessed a few serious crashes. There are also maps which plot UK
schools and low bridges plus you can add a very useful map of
frequent mobile speed camera traps.
The London congestion charge is also catered for with a good
warning system as you approach the outskirts of the charge zone,
these only operate during the hours of charging and not at all at
weekends. The touch screen proved to be easy to use while on the
move with a row of buttons for changing between the various screen
modes and that all important silence key for stopping an alert
driving you mad.
Almost all of the parameters can be configured including
switching from voice alerts to beeps, analogue or digital
speedometer and the distance of warnings before cameras. We couldn't
help but be impressed by this extension of an already very capable
product its easy on a par with the Origin products if not ahead
though its use of such an attractive and functional screen. At £460
its not cheap plus you will need to continue to subscribe to map
updates for years 2 onwards but this is a good system which is a
small price to pay for keeping your license clean.
