Netgear
gave us the 108mbps router and at the same time released the WG511T
PCI card which is so fast it wears its underpants on the outside
superman style, put simply this is the fastest wifi card on the
market to date giving a blistering 108mbps between enabled cards and
routers. The new super GTM standard means you can finally use a
wireless network to stream video with jerky pictures or stalls and
splutters and as the higher speed element tails off with the
distance from the router or with a poor quality signal the new
dynamic rate shifting technology will select the optimum standard /
settings for the connection to give you the fastest most robust
connection at all times. Another plus is that the WG511T includes
sections of the forthcoming 802.11e standards specifically those
supporting streaming media services.
The Netgear WG511T 108mbps Wifi card also benefits from Netgear's
excellence in wifi design over the past decade, it is backwardly
compatible with both 802.11b and the 43mbps 802.11g standard and the
new design antenna gives greater range on these older standards as
LP was able to prove with his laptop which will work in the garden
with the WG511T which means 50ft through 4 walls.
Encryption employs the WEP protocol at 128 bit and this can also
be upgraded in firmware to the Windows XP supported WiFi protected
access (WPA) ensuring your wireless data transmission are not
eavesdropped and that your valuable bandwidth is not stolen by
someone nearby connecting to your network.
Netgear are always striving to make operation of wifi networks
available to a less technical audience, after all its not just
techies that want to use a laptop in the garden or stream MP3 around
the house but the barrier to entry can be a big one, knowledge. With
the latest generation of wifi product from Netgear we get install
wizards which do more than just install the drivers they also add
you card to an existing network and can help you set up the security
features.
Priced at around £50 the Netgear WG511T 108mbps wifi card is a
bit more than some of the 802.11g cards on the market but not by
much and by investing in Super GTM technology you can future proof
your Laptop and still use it with any other wifi standard networks
you encounter.
