| The
Video Ipod? Logic dictates that everything evolves in
time, but every so often their is a step change in technology and
the way we use it. Apple have brought about a revolution in music,
they were not the first to give us MP3 and the device to play it on,
but they were the first to mass market the MP3 player with such
vigour and conviction they created a market and the technological
shift that resulted in downloaded music outselling CD's
So what next? Video that's what. Apple and others are looking at
replicating their success in MP3 downloads with video downloads and
the hardware on which to view creating "video to go".
The challenges are bigger but with the pace of Broadband growth
and Disk technology it is merely a matter of time until the extra
size of video is removed as a perceived barrier and gadget fans like
you and I can download a movie (legally) to watch on your PC and
also a portable device. Sure we need to look at digital rights
management and agree a format perhaps MPEG4 or WM10 but commercial
will shall solve these quandaries for the prize is to control the
next leap in the way we consume media.
We laugh now at the sight of someone using a phone box as we all
have mobile phones, we are starting to smirk at those who rely on
VHS machines when we all have DVD and Sky+, how long before we amuse
ourselves with tales of when you actually had to be in a set place
at a set time to watch a TV programme or film?
Why can't I watch the next episode of eastenders on the tube the
next morning, why can't I watch the new series of the West Wing now
as it is available in the states? there aren't good answers and that
is spurring consumers like me to demand the service we want.
However the next step in media evolution is in sight the Video
Ipod or perhaps a Windows based device backed by Sony, the brand is
not the issue, our broadband connection has just been boosted to
2mbits and that's just the start, all the elements that make high
resolution video downloads possible are dropping into place.
In a world of instant consumerism we are all very busy doing
"things" so when we want to consume media we want it now, not when
some scheduler says so or when we can get to the cinema. Since we
left the cave having discovered fire changes in technology have
always surprised and in the most part delighted, so keep your eyes
peeled for the Video Ipod and iTunes movies.
