Security Fundamentals

First up this month a big thank you for all the feedback we've had recently it's helped us focus what we review and given us a warm felling at the same time....ahhhhh!

So what have I been spending that rarest of commodities (spare time) on this month, strangely the answer is security.

You will no doubt have been lectured by your employer of local geek on the importance of having up to date anti virus and perhaps even followed it, then you found out how important it is for a broadband connection to sit behind a firewall. So you've got AVG free (our choice for AV) and Zone Alarm (also free and the best software firewall) and are felling quite secure.

But so many companies and individuals forget the biggest security risks are the things we do, a company's biggest risk is its staff, one employee with a USB key can upload all manner of nasties in seconds but how many company's even have a policy on this? This also extends to basic physical security to prevent unauthorised access to machines, do you leave your PC open and unlocked while at lunch? Imagine how easy it is for someone to send an email with your name on it to the boss telling what you really think, we know its easy we've seen it done.

And now just to make any IT departments life more of a nightmare a new breed of security risk is emerging in the form of communications software like Skype.

Skype is one of our favourite software applications, giving free (yes free) IP based phone calls and with the addition of Skype in and Skype out you can replace your normal phone line altogether but it also punches the biggest hole through tour firewall known to mankind.

Regular Skype users will have already noticed a number of "updates" and its starting to look a bit like Skype have a constant battle on their hands with a Chinese hacker having managed to compromise the system at least once. The fundamental risk is that Skype has been specifically designed to pass through firewalls and NAT (network address translation) layers to make it easy to use and set-up even over a corporate LAN and this means that the Skype protocol and network is a target for forced entry.

Lets not scare monger here this is only a possibility but network administrators have started to wake up and are just blocking Skype full stop, which is a shame as it's a great bit of software and an application we've come to rely on the Lordpercy offices.
