 Now some
companies manage
to produce certain products with ease and hit the right note every time,
Nokia are the mobile experts but when it comes to Bluetooth headsets, well
if we are being polite they have a little to learn, the HS-2W was one of the
worst attempts made by a major phone company, but at least the Nokia HS-3W
doesn't have much to live up to!
Now the Nokia HS-3W is an in ear style headset a bit like a
personal stereo, this does not suit all tastes but it certainly provides
good audio quality the Bluetooth element with the HS-3W is the connection
between the headset base and the phone, you can then clip the main piece of
the HS-3W to your belt of jacket with the earpiece connected by a thin flex.
As already mentioned audio quality is very good as is voice transfer but the
cable connection takes some getting used to and it doesn't really feel like
Bluetooth headset you really do feel connected by cables which misses out on
the major BT benefit.
The only saving grace for the HS-3W wired
approach is that the in ear style earpiece is comfortable and
practical for motorbike users as it can be used within a helmet,
unlike most of the boom or outer ear style devices.
Nokia have also made this headset a bit
on the heavy side at 32 grams, and the battery gives a little under 4hrs
talk time which is pretty poor given the competitions offerings, it does
support both the hands free and headset protocol and will pair with up to 8
devices.
In our tests it performed well enough
with a good stable connection for the specified 10 meters but we couldn't
really say we liked the cabled earpiece it just feels wrong, plus if you do
like this then the Sony Ericsson HBH-200 offers better standby / talk time
and caller display on the base unit. Lets hope Nokia get it right with the
upcoming HS-4W.
