DAB digital radio is here and take up of
the service is building rapidly with a multitude of news radio services
available only by DAB or digital satellite or terrestrial.
The Pure Evoke 1 is a classic design fully functional DAB
receiver the unit has a 2 line LCD display which is backlit green using this
and the rotary controls it is easy to browse the available stations which
are displayed by name and can be stored on the six preset buttons. The unit
has a headphone socket and also line out allowing it to be used with a hifi
system to produce a stereo image (the evoke only has one speaker). Setting
up the Evoke for the first time is simple enough as at power on the unit
searches for all available stations which you can then browse, DAB also
supports the sending of text, therefore you can see what track is playing or
what show is currently on air (broadcaster dependent).
The sound quality from the Pure Evoke 1 is surprisingly good
even without being hooked to a hifi, the in built speaker is very capable and
more than sufficient for "kitchen" listening or for that matter any room if
you aren't after a great deal of volume, the overall package is of a very
high build quality and doesn't look out of place even in the most
technologically advanced home.
Downsides? well it could be stereo and an option to
run on batteries may have been useful but still if you want a DAB radio for
under £90 the Evoke-1 is an excellent buy.
