A
gig of storage on a USB key costs around £70 in the UK so imagine
our surprise when we got Samsung’s 1gb mp3 player for under £110 and
better still it’s not just a basic model. The Samsung YP-T6Z MP3
player on review here is quite a surprise package the tiny device
measures just 55 x 23 x 22mm meaning that it could be a little so
and so to find if it slips down the back of the sofa.Although it
only weighs 30 grams the Samsung YP-T6Z feels very sturdy indeed,
the metal bodied unit seems well built and is ergonomically pleasing
for such a small device. The main controls are along the upper edge
of the device with the lay / pause button and lock function easily
accessed. Both menu and track selection is driven from the joystick
to the right of the small 4 line screen, despite having such a small
screen the text is readable and aided by a strong cool blue
backlight. We found navigation a little fiddly mainly due to the
size of our thumbs, perhaps the engineers at Samsung are all 12
years old and this doesn’t cause them issues. Watching LP’s ham
fisted attempts at track selection has been a constant source of
entertainment this week.
The YP-T6Z supports MP3, WMA, ASF and Ogg playback and we tried
both MP3 and Ogg files with good results, its great to see a small
flash player supporting Ogg as the Ogg format allows us to compress
a bit more to get the most out of the 1gb capacity. Audio quality
was good if not stunning and the supplied headphones are a little on
the cheap side, but its more than adequate for keeping you
entertained while out and about or at the gym.
Samsung grace the YPT6z with plenty of extras too, there is an FM
tuner for listening to the radio when you exhaust your MP3
collection and this can also be used a source to record from as the
little Samsung also encodes MP3 files either from the radio or the
inbuilt microphone.
Loading up the device is quick thanks to the USB 2.0 connection
and this also enables the drive to act as a USB key to move almost
any kind of file. Battery life is again excellent with us getting
almost 20 hours from the single AAA battery even with heavy use of
the backlight during device browsing.
Due to its capacity the natural comparison for the Samsung YP-T6Z
or Yepp as its seems to have been branded is the Apple Ipod Shuffle,
the shuffle also has 1gb of storage but does not support Ogg or have
an FM tuner or encoding facilities, plus the big plus for the Yepp
is the screen which is something any shuffle user is learning to
live without.
Prices at £109, £10 more than the shuffle the Samsung Yepp YP-6ZT
is excellent value for money and a feature packed device, perhaps
the biggest downside is its size, it’s just so small we do worry
about losing it amongst the general clutter of the Lordpercy.com
office. We’ll just have to hope Samsung don’t want it back just yet!
