Some products get the strangest of names but the forthcoming Sky
Gnome has to win this months prize, during the announcement of Sky's
results they revealed details of the Gnome which allows subscribers
to remotely control their digibox and stream audio from it.The
Gnome comes in a rather striking blue or orange and has a largish
backlit LCD screen for navigation and control, the Gnome has a
claimed 30 meter range which should allow it to be placed in any room
of the house. Its primary use will be streaming of digital radio of
which there are 100+ stations on sky, this is deal for those that do
not have DAB radio or live in a poor DAB reception area.
The gnome allows you to control many features of your digibox and
has its own independent volume control which drives its own stereo
speakers or via the line out or headphone socket, its a fairly
rugged little chap with an inbuilt carry handle and also the
provision for mains power to be attached.

But there is always a battery option and the Gnome has an 8 hour
rechargeable battery allowed some truly wire free roaming. For those
with Sky+ the Gnome will also replay pre stored media so you could
record the top 40 and then play it back while you are doing some DIY
on a bank holiday.
The Gnome is an unusual step for sky and is surely just one
development on the way towards a video to go type solution where you
can fill your Video Gnome with things recorded on a Sky+ box and
watch them on the way to work on the bus?
Available in October no price has yet been set for the Sky Gnome
but it is compatible with all sky digiboxes and will be available to
anyone with a current Sky subscription, it remains to be seen how
popular it will be but its worth a bet that the Gnome will end up in
a few stockings this Christmas.
