There are many downsides to being a dedicated gadgeteer, the
stack of black boxes under your TV, the nest of cables behind desks
and furniture, even the increased power bill, but the biggest
bugbear is the number of remote controls that accumulate in the
home. We have seen a fair few all in one remote controls and some
of the cheaper models do a good job of doing the work of 5 ordinary
units but the Sony RMAV3000T can eliminate a whopping 18 devices in
one go, but this brings some unique challenges of ergonomic design
and user interface set-up. The downsides of a unit that is so
programmable is that teaching it is a bit like taking on a job at an
inner city school, you settle down for a one on one learning session
and every time you press a button something else reacts, in fact we
had to resort to taking each device into another room for the
process. Some devices are easier than others, gadgets like CD
players and TV's proved fairly simple, but the latest set top boxes
were a 1 hours job and Sky+ took forever. But the results are
worth the pain, you can control any IR device from your sofa from TV
and DVD to HiFi and even your curtains (if you have an IR control
unit for them). The well designed RMAV-3000T has large keys for
easy navigation paired with a good size blue backlit LCD which
allows customised screen layouts and up to 258 customisable labels,
even the most complex macro (up to 32 stages) can be executed with a
single button push. The Sony RMAV-3000T is powered by 4 x AAA
batteries and this with moderate use should run the control for
approx 6 months. If you are the type of gadget nut that has looked
at so many all in one remote controls and found them lacking then
this baby has enough options to run Nasa and at £130 you won't need
to go to the Government for funding!
