When we last had a play with a network walkman the only real fault
we could find was the lack of native MP3 support, well finally they
have given way and the Sony NW-HD3 will support MP3 as a native file
format which is a first for a Sony MP3 player which is over 1gb in
size. The main benefits of the HD1 are still present in the newer
NW-HD3 these are primarily the battery life at some 30 hours and
size / style which really won the Lordpercy.com team over before.
The 20gb hard drive is enough for 13,000 tracks and the sonic stage
software supplied with your network walkman will now handle both MP3
and the Sony ATRAC3 format, plus the transfer of files onto the
device is quicker due to the direct USB connection.
The 130 gram NW-HD3 is also claimed to be a protector of music on
that its G- Sensor technology ensures that minor bumps and knocks do
not destroy the 20gb hard drive and thus your music files are
protected against those everyday moments, of course you can still do
some serious damage to the Aluminium body and sleek finish.
Driving the Sony NW-HD3 is pretty much identical to the NW-HD1
apart from the slightly larger navigator button, the 7 line 1.5" LCD
display is ample for reading all the ID3 tag information of browsing
the stored files and much like Apple, Sony do have the knack for a
good user interface.
As a USB mass storage device the NW-HD3 can store files other
than the MP3, ATRAC3, WMA and WAV files that it can replay, it is
quite possible to hold most office documents and images such as JPEG
and Giff.
Sony
have decided to keep the price down to a head to head battle with
the 20gb Ipod and in doing this there is no dock just a USB sync
lead supplied, your £219 can be used to purchase one of 4 colours
available to the UK (blue not being available just yet) these are
silver, black, red and pink. Black is going to be in very short
supply and Red won't be available until the new year.
Initial shipments of the Sony NW-HD3will be on the 15th and 20th
of December and there is already a lot of demand for what might
finally turn out to be the real Ipod killer, with 30hrs of playback,
stunning looks and fantastic user interface and now native MP3
support it looks like Apple may not have such a merry Christmas.
