Starck Optical Mouse

Starck Optical MouseSometimes us windows users can feel a bit overcome by the constant onslaught of sexy looking apple Mac models and accessories but why should you have to opt for a Mac OS to get style with your computing, one of the easiest areas to add a touch of style is in your selection of a mouse and the latest Starck Optical Mouse from Microsoft offers something a little different.

Designed by Philippe Starck there is no doubting the style credentials of this little optical baby and the minute you open the well sealed box there is an element of excitement as the curving hemisphere is revealed, although smaller than an intellimouse the Starck Optical Mouse fits well in the hand and the shape feels very natural and is comfortable for prolonged use.

Controls are simple yet very effective, the optical sensor means no need for a mouse matt and a very accurate quick response, the whole left and right sections of the main body act as buttons with a central scroll wheel neatly embedded into the centre of the mouse. The design is also ambidextrous which allows for easy use either left or right handed with no real compromise on operation.

Probably the most striking feature is the central illuminated strip, this glows blue (or orange) all the time the mouse is connected to a PC via the USB lead, our test model in blue looked rather striking against the red glow of the optical sensor below.

Its not all good news, we do miss the forward and back buttons of our intellimouse (now sadly departed for the world of dead mice) the Starck only has the basic controls of left and right click plus the scroll wheel, the cable is long enough and quite thin which does worry us about the long term robustness of the mouse given the fact that most people coil the cable around the mouse when not in use or travelling.

At £26 the Starck Optical mouse is not over priced by any stretch of the imagination and the price is easily justified by the exterior alone, even though its a fine and competent mouse for every day use, a nice gift perhaps or maybe a good second mouse we have to admit to being impressed with the design and operation of this unit.
