The
Targus Wireless Multimedia Presenter is a gadget for the office
dweller who wants to show their inner geek. Often its difficult at
work to let other geeks or gadget fans know that you too have a
passion for electronics, perhaps there is an iPod on your desk, but
that too has become mainstream, even the SETI screensaver is old
hat. So when we had a play with the Targus multimedia presenter we
thought this could be a winner combining the mundane job of
PowerPoint presentations with a funky gadget. The Targus device
comes in 2 main parts the 2.4ghz RF receiver which looks just like a
USB dongle plugs into your laptop or PC (the one driving the
presentation) and the main controller unit which measures 120 x 50 x
35mm sits neatly in your palm up to 15 meters away.
Using RF the Targus system allows you to drive a presentation
from the other end of a room without issue, ideal for those who have
ugly laptops or when the mouse lead won't quite reach to where you
want to sit. But this is more than just a basic remote presenter, oh
yes your inner Geek will be having kittens when you see that the
presenter is actually a fully featured track ball with dedicated
buttons which can be set to open applications such as windows media
player or internet explorer at the correct moment.
Of course no geek presentation would be complete without a laser
pointer and the Targus does not disappoint here either with a very
bright laser spot even from the edge of the RF range (15 meters). To
be fair it takes quite a bit of getting used to and in the time we
had to play with it we found the operation of the trackball to be a
tad fiddly, but we're sure with practice we'd be one handed
presenters within days.
It can operate in one of 3 modes, presentation (obvious really),
Music where it can drive Windows media and then mouse where it acts
as a trackball extension.
The presenter comes with a lanyard so you can anchor it to your
hand in case you drop it while getting over excited presenting some
essential financial information or hurriedly trying g to shutdown an
inappropriate website that popped up mid PowerPoint! The presenter
is powered by 2 triple A batteries and seems to last for ages if you
spare the laser pointer, we loved the quick start application
buttons and the whole black and silver style of the unit.
Can we justify £35 for the Targus Wireless Multimedia Presenter,
hell yes, never has presenting dull end of month figures been so fun
and it's much less public than wearing a "Geek inside" T Shirt.
