A
gadget can be flash or sometimes it can just be too much, now as of
now the jury is still out on the Targus wireless remote presenter,
LP witnessed it in action today and while its a neat gadget no one
in the meeting could quiet believe that anyone had the front to use
it in public. Despite having owned the gadget for a few months our
travelling sales chappy clearly did not have the knack as he
regularly shot past the item on screen he needed to click, you could
visibly see the other atendees pressing the table or there pens as
his cursor shot past the on screen button. That said at the end of
our presentation a small huddle gathered around the man with the
presenter gadget wanting to have a play with the device. So what
is the Targus wireless remote presenter, well the name is pretty
descriptive, it comes in 2 bits the USB dongle bit which plugs into
any windows PC or laptop and acts as a mouse input and RF receiver.
Then to control unit itself which consists of a RF transmitter and
thumb pad, together they allow you to steer a pointer around the
screen form the other end of the room a good 10 meters away from the
PC that's running the presentation.
Setup is easy as it does not require a driver installation on win
2k or XP and the 16 way pad acts exactly the same as a mouse but it
does take a bit of getting used to, best to practice our of anyone's
sight until you can control the pointer with reasonable accuracy.
Measuring 12.5 x 4.5 x 2 cm its a good size and sits well in the
hand the receiver is remarkably small compared to a USB storage key
and it uses USB 1.1 as its communication protocol.
The silver grey handset also doubles as a laser pointer, which we
have found to be of dubious use expect when trying to blind
colleagues during long presentations (not advisable). In case it
takes a few knocks Targus offer a 2 year standard warranty and at
£30 its an ideal gift for the executive in your life or as a great
gadget to impress and baffle workmates.
