Even the most mobile
Londoner gets lost once in a while and out comes the pocket A-Z to avoid
embarrassment, but that's not exactly techie or even remotely gadgets like ,
now of course you could have something like pocket streets on your PDA but
its a bit geeky to take a PDA out clubbing so how about having maps on your
phone?
Tube
London Streets for the P800 and P900 is just that the engine for this
software suite runs on a P800 or P900 from Sony Ericsson, the name "tube"
relates to the primary product a London Tube map which is good but as every
train and station has a tube map we are at a bit of a loss as to why you'd
but it, alternately the tube London streets application is far more useful.
So what is this software application
all about, Tube London Streets offers a search facility with the main
central London maps, input a street name and then select from the list the
correct map will then be displayed on your phone which you can zoom into
street level and then back out to gain a wider view of the surrounding area,
the maps are broken into 9 tiles. Each tile at approx 1.5mb and they reach
from Walthamstow in the NE to Chelsea in the SW, you can also search for
points of interest like Tube stations, hospitals and general area like
"Piccadilly".
Control of the maps is via the stylish
and screen, you can scroll the map smoothly around each tile to follow your
route, you can also specify a home location which may be your office , home
or local station. The main Tube application takes 3.5mb of space on your
machine and each of the 9 tiles are 1.5mb each, Tube London streets can be
installed on the memory stick duo included with the P800 / 900 although you
may want to get a slightly bigger memory stick if you want all the tiles
(which we recommend).
On test we found this little
application to be so valuable, the tiles are actually provided by the A-Z
company so the data is spot on, its just the ticket for finding that little
back street in Soho that you can never find first time, perhaps you might
want to combine London Streets and the main Tube Pro application we guess it
depends on need and finances. At £25 for all 9 tiles and the "tube"
application its not the cheapest of applications but its certainly
functional and a great gadgets to impress colleagues and customers.
While we reviewed the P800 / P900
version you can now also get Pocket PC / Palm and Smartphone versions.
